This place has such a gracious history of welcoming international travellers and showing them the sophistication and beauty of Balinese culture. Long may it continue. Stunning art is dotted around the property, which stretches up and down a tropical hillside, flanked by the sacred Tjampuhan River. As my room was down by the river I was lulled to sleep by the sound of its rushing waters, and got lots of exercise walking up and down the steps. This location gives great access to the centre of Ubud without its hectic vibe. The breakfast buffet is spectacular, with super attentive staff and such a choice of foods. To the reviewer who complained about 'no bacon' 🙄 you've come to a gorgeous country, why not open your mind and try something new? Like the special Balinese treats? The omelette cooked fresh for you? The pool is a beautiful spot, with charming carvings. The spa is amazing, I had a superb 90 minute Balinese massage by the river. Final special shout-out to head of the cleaning team for my room - Surat(?spelling) who was so warm and friendly. I wish he was my uncle.

The location is great - only 15 minutes walk to the heart of shopping in Ubud. I believe the hotel also offers a shuttle service to the Main Street. We loved the comfortable bed, the traditional style of the hotel and the beautiful rooms, and the truly lovely and helpful staff. The breakfast and meals were delicious. In particular we were thrilled we had booked ahead for Dinner on the Bridge. It is a private dinner just for two and this is available to one couple only each night. The service was superb with a dedicated waiter, the bridge was beautifully decorated with lots of flower petals and a myriad of candles and little lights, and the feast of four courses (we had the Western menu) was truly delicious for a very reasonable price. It was a very lovely stay and we heartily recommend staying here.

The hotel is a classic, with a jaw-dropping view of the Wos River Basin. It was constructed on the side of the ravine, around the original house built for Walter Spies, the Austrian artist & composer, who settled in Ubud a century ago. The Spies house has been refurbished, and is on offer as the premium room in the hotel. Besides the spectacular view, the hotel displays an impressive collection of traditional Balinese art, antique wood & stone carvings. The staff were very helpful and responsive to all of our needs. The breakfast buffet was above and beyond our expectations -- loaded with fresh fruit, juices, pastries, and eggs or Indonesian food to order. Overall, a really pleasant and relaxing experience, steeped in Balinese culture.

Super nice staff! The employers are really nice, do their jobs well:from reception to cleaning to kitchen to spa, the service is top. The location is nice. They have a really beautiful view towards the temple and the forest. The design of the hotel is top: very green and a lot of stone sculptures that give this place a mistique air. The SPA is just wow. Even though they have a lot of rooms it felt really intimate and not at all crowded. The breakfast was good. The rooms were good enough, big and clean. The furniture a bit old but it wasn't a problem. The location is great for exploration. Such a nice and quiet place, but also close to the busy area in Ubud and the ridge walk.

Had not been to the hotel for 20 years and it had not changed much in that time, in a good way. We love the location, just out of town (about a 10-15 minute walk) and on the side of the river. It is very green and pleasant, and grounds are beautiful and well maintained. Pool was great (suggest you request a room near the main pool). Restaurant was great for one dinner and our breakfasts which had a decent range. Loved our room with a small terrace to be able to sit outside. Aircon worked well and bathroom was adequate. Good public lounges. Great staff who were helpful and friendly.
